Measuring roughly the size of an king sized bed, a RangeStation® is the robotic system that autonomously exchanges spent battery packs from a recently landed UAV, with freshly charged packs from charging bays within the RangeStation®. In other words it's a battery vending machine, almost exactly like a common soft drink vending machine. The battery exchange process takes approximately 90 seconds from the time an aircraft lands, until the UAV is "cleared" for departure. Depleted batteries from aircraft are charged in the charging array of the RangeStations®.

When several RangeStations® are deployed in a city, they form a RangeStation® network. Multiple UAV's can fly from one RangeStation® to the closest neighboring RangeStation®, and at each point getting a fresh set of batteries. This enables almost unlimited range, indefinite flight time, and no costly human interaction with the UAV. RangeStations® will typically be deployed on roof tops of buildings, and revenue sharing agreements can be formalized with a property owner on which the RangeStation® is located.


Each Battery pack is dimensionally standardized. This allows seamless interaction with our landing gear and our RangeStation® robotics, regardless of the make of aircraft being refueled. Each battery pack houses 24 X 18650 lithium ion cylindrical cells batteries (22.2V). The hobbyist UAV community has not broadly adopted these cells since their charging time is significantly longer than lithium polymer ion batteries. They are also not favored by hobbyists because of their lower "C" rating or discharge capacity. However, these 18650 cylindrical cells are used exclusively in the overwhelming majority of eBikes, laptops and electric motor vehicles. Tesla Motors uses them exclusively to power all of their vehicles. 18650 cylindrical lithium ion battery technology is preferred by industry because they are the most energy dense batteries in the world for their weight (gravimetric energy density). These cells can be charged and discharged about 300 times before they no longer hold an optimum charge, after which the batteries in the pack must be discarded (and recycled), and fresh packs re-introduced into the RangeStations® battery charging array. Our custom battery pack enclosures can be opened, and reused when replacement batteries are needed. Besides the 18650 cells, each battery pack also contains a small Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag. The RFID tag is automatically scanned by a reader in the RangeStation® after extraction from an aircraft’s landing gear. This allows us to build a health history of each battery pack, and predict imminent failures.

In the near future, the FAA will require a minimum of two batteries on all commercial UAV’s.
